Learning how to start a home-based business on the internet was the best thing I have ever done in my life.
Of course, that doesn’t include having kids and all that other good stuff.
I’m talking about the kind of decisions that determine the type of life we will live.
That same decision that has most waking up, going to work, coming home, and sleeping, just do it all again the following day.
The same type of craziness that told me I needed to fire myself, even if it meant I was going to be jobless.
Without that experience, I wouldn’t be able to show you how to start a home-based business now, would I?
Thankfully so, I’m able to and willing to show you exactly how to do it.
You might not be used to the changes that are necessary to be successful, but that’s okay.
With the knowledge and experience that comes with the journey, you should be able to accomplish a lot more than most.
But before you go creating that success story like no one else you know, there are several things you might want to know; Like the fact that over 50% of US businesses are home-based.
I know it sounds crazy, but the numbers are going higher.
Or that most of the money you spend to live is tax-deductible as a home-based business owner.
That is true and great to know, but not what I’m trying to get at.
I want to go over something a little more personal.
Something that will prevent you from becoming a part of the over 95% that fail with something like network marketing.
Get in the right mindset and maybe take some notes.
So How Do You Start a Home Based Business?
It would be nice if there were a straightforward answer, but that’s now how it is.
That’s also probably the reason why not many succeed.
They aren’t willing to learn and change what they know.
They aren’t willing to make the sacrifice that is necessary to start and run any business for that matter.
But again, the goal is to lead you down the path of success.
Let’s cut out all the guessing and assuming, and let’s get into what is needed.
So before you start your very own home-based business (especially online), let’s do a little learning.
1. Evaluate Your Current Situation

The first thing you need to do is take a look at what is going on with your life.
Are you single or married?
Do you have any kids?
How are the people you around most of the time?
Are they open to other things like you are, or are they a 9 to 5-er that will probably tell you to get a regular old job like everyone else?
Do you have the brain to think outside the box and do something that everyone else isn’t doing?
I know it sounds like nothing, but this is the most important thing you need to start a home-based business or any other business for that matter.
Your friends are great, and all but they are probably going to be the biggest problem for you.
They will be demanding your time that you can use to run your business.
They will tell you that whatever you’re doing doesn’t work.
This idea is a bit extreme to some of you, but completely changing your network is a big decision that is necessary.
It sounds doable when you think about it, but you’ll see how much time it takes if and when you do decide to start your own home-based business.
2. Comb the “Opportunities”

Getting started in anything that involves making money is no easy task.
For one, they are not easy to find, and two, everything is designed to work against you, especially on the internet.
The minute you search for something like “how to make money online,” get ready to see all the ads you never saw before.
“Learn how to make money doing with this simple system.”
“See how I went from $0 – $1 billion in a day.”
The amount and array of ads are endless, and you will not be able to tell which are legit and which are scams.
Let me just tell you that 99.9% of them are entirely useless.
They’re either a scam, a Ponzi scheme, or nothing but a way for the owner of that product to make money.
I mean, why would some millionaire want to show you their so-called “secrets”?
I know, because you will pay them, along with a million other people who want to get rich.
Then they will be a millionaire.
That’s why and also one of the reasons you should never take advice from the rich.
Not to say that there aren’t real opportunities out there, but I’m just saying.
There are legit ways to make money online but do know that they will be hidden thousands of scams.
I will also be going over the different ideas a little later, so let’s move on.
3. Find What Sparks Curiosity

As a complete newb looking to start a home-based business, it’s apparent that you don’t know much.
You don’t know much about what is out there, and you don’t even know what you think you can do.
That’s neither a good nor a bad thing but one that you can understand.
Now before I started making money with a blog, not once did I ever think I would ever make my living as a blogger.
Heck, I went an extra year in high school (yup, I was a super senior), I dropped out of college, and I hated writing.
Looking back now, I can see how everything works.
It’s not what I liked to do or what I was even good at doing.
It’s more about what I was willing to learn, what I wanted to do as a career, and, most notably, what I was ready to do to accomplish them.
So being that you probably know nothing about what you want to do, your best bet is to go with something that you are at least interested in doing.
Are you good at marketing?
Do others often take your advice?
Are you into computers or technology?
Or maybe doing some hands-on type of work is more of what you want to do.
Maybe you are good at teaching or showing others how to do things.
Whatever it is, at least come up with the base of your home-based business.
4. Find Your Medium

For this step, don’t take too much time.
Do think about what kind of platform or way you think or plan on conducting business.
If you have products that you want to sell, think about whether you are going to do it online or through a more traditional means.
Maybe you’re interested in doing business on the internet or doing some network marketing.
Think about what you are interested in and how you plan to go about running things.
I started my first job doing yard work, but I wasn’t the owner.
It was my brother.
I did get the experience, and I, of course, got to see what was required to run such a business.
Something as simple as that was enough to show me the ins and outs of how a business operates.
The tools needed, the capital, and even the income potential.
I also got to see the little I made that made me realize who makes the real money.
The same thing applies to start a home-based business online, so brainstorm the same way you would with a traditional company.
5. Come Up With a Plan and Count Your Pennies

Starting a home-based business online is great because it doesn’t require a lot of the necessary things that come with a traditional company.
You don’t need more confusion with some complicated business plans.
You don’t need to rent any space that costs thousands of dollars just because it’s “commercial.”
And you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on overhead costs that are the killer for most businesses.
Doing things online is much simpler and requires a lot less money.
I mean, a lot.
Instead of renting commercial space, you get a website.
Instead of trying to get a loan, you work with what you got.
I started my first online business with less than $50.
And believe it or not, I spend less than $100/month even today.
The extra spending is for upgrades and sprucing up my business.
They are not needed but can help later when you start making money.
Do figure out how much money you have as it will come in handy when we start going over the different ways that you can start your home-based business online.
Better yet, let’s do that now.
Home Based Business Ideas
All these tips and pointers on how to start a home-based business on the internet are pretty useless.
Unless, of course, you have some legitimate opportunities that work.
Without leaving you in the dark, I want to show you what is available for you out there.
I have done them myself, so I know that they are legit, and they work.
Use the ideas you came up with above to help you decide on the ideas below.
Start a Home-Based Online Business

The internet is the best way for anyone to start a home-based business as well as make a living.
For one, you have the biggest market in the world (literally) at your fingertips.
Two, you decide on everything.
You are the boss.
Lastly, the income potential is quite incredible.
Oh, and forget about knowing all the technical nonsense that you once needed a decade ago.
Building websites and dealing with computer coding are a thing of the past.
It’s now 2020, and all you need to know how to do is click a mouse.
So what we know so far is this.
- Startup and overhead costs are ridiculously low
- You do not need any technical knowledge
- It’s possible to make money online
- Income potential is great
With that in mind, let’s see just how you will be going about making money.
Start a Blog
No one knows this, but blogging is the most underrated but life-changing business out there.
I make money blogging, and so do thousands of other online entrepreneurs who took the time and effort to learn it.
It’s beyond simple to get started and can have you living the life most people will never live.
All you need is a simple website, a passion or interest, and the willingness to share that knowledge with the online world.
Through those efforts, you can make money through advertising, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, or even a product or course that you created.
The income potential is through the roof, and others are making over $100,00/month just from a simple blog.
Just like Michelle from Makingsenseofcents.com.

Become a Drop Shipper
Dropshipping is one online business that is just as amazing as every other model on this list.
The idea of dropshipping is stupidly simple, but ridiculously amazing as well.
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method where a store doesn’t keep the products it sells in stock. Instead, when a store sells a product using the dropshipping model, it purchases the item from a third party and has it shipped directly to the customer. As a result, the seller doesn’t have to handle the product directly.
You are the drop shipper, and you are the store owner, who is trying to turn a profit.
You become a partner with a company (usually Alibaba), and you get their products (without buying anything) and add them to your online store.
From there, you will get visitors to that store, and they will then make a purchase.
Once that purchase is made (through your store), you will then take that money and make the actual purchase from your dropshipping partner company.
They send the product, and you keep any leftover money.
It’s simple and complicated at the same time, but when you see results like Irwin and his wife have, I think you’ll do what it takes.

Sell Your Products Online
Selling your products is your very traditional way of a home-based online business.
It is very self-explanatory, and that’s why I saved it for last.
With opportunities like dropshipping, affiliate marketing, and Fulfillment By Amazon, it’s almost not worth it to sell your products.
Now, if you have some fantastic products that will sell like crazy, then this is going to be your best bet.
3DCart.com has a simple guide on how you can get started, so check that out if you’re interested.
Create An Info Product

Everyone has some kind of knowledge that someone else can benefit from and use.
With something like the internet, you can do it in digital form.
Create a simple guide, throw it on Clickbank, and let others do the selling for you.
Remember how you sell other people’s products to make money with affiliate marketing?
Creating your product allows you to be on the “other people’s products” side of things.
Doing so is way more profitable than affiliate marketing but comes with a lot more work.
But if you are some fitness guru, chef, or dang plumber, you can create a simple course and share it with the world.
Trust me. It’s worth the time and effort if you can make the sacrifice.
Start a Home-Based MLM Business
Although I am not a fan, MLMs will always be there and is a way to start a home-based business.
Even on the internet.
I’m sure you’ve heard of Melaleucas and Amway’s.
And the Tupperware and Mary Kay’s that everyone and their mothers have pitched to you in the past.
Those are good old MLM companies, and they are one of the options that can have you working from home.
The idea is to join and sell the same membership/products you just bought so that you can earn a commission from others.
Being “multiple levels,” you can earn money from the person that joined under you as well as the people that join under them.
Some refer to it as a pyramid scheme style business due to that same structure.
The video above is not necessarily to promote MLMs, but it does come with a lot of truth and is flat-out hilarious.
Start a Home-Based Flipping Business
I started my young entrepreneur life flipping cars, and I loved it.
It kept me busy and made me thousands of dollars from just one flip.
The idea is to buy low and sell high, just like how a business does things.
However, flipping is different in the sense that you aren’t ordering any products but rather buying single items.
Now doing it on the internet is also different.
You can utilize somewhat of the dropshipping business model, or you can buy actual products and send them to your customers.
What’s cool about the internet is that you can also flip concert tickets with sites like Ticket Flipping.
Master something like flipping, and you can make lots of money in real life as well as on the internet.
Start a Home Based Business Helping Local Businesses

Every single business in your area could use more customers, and that’s a fact.
Whether it be a tree cutting service or a home cleaning service, there is a business that the internet can help.
The problem for most businesses is the fact that they don’t know anything about search engines and how to get ranked on Google.
The solution?
Hire a local SEO expert who knows what they are doing.
The process is straightforward and can bring you thousands of dollars every single month for some simple work.
Remember that time you searched for “the best plumbers in nowhere, Las Vegas”?
This search will lead you to some plumbing company’s website or a website created by a local SEO expert.
That search then gives traffic to the business and ultimately making them more money.
You show them your results, they see sales increase, and you get paid.
If they don’t want to pay, you can simply send that traffic to their competition.
But I’m sure they wouldn’t like that and are willing to pay some good money for it too.
This guide about local SEO is a great place to start as they lay everything out entirely.
Before You Get Started
These are the best ways to start a home-based business, especially if you are looking to do it online.
Now just like everything else in life, there is always a downside to all the pretty things.
It is no different with a home-based business, even if all we see are the benefits of working from home.
If you’ve ever known anyone who does business on the internet, you will see that they work a lot more than you think.
Working from home is not easy, and it does come with its obstacles.
You Are Responsible For Everything
I know we all want to be our boss, but it’s not an easy task.
As an employee of some company, they tell you what to do and how to do things.
You don’t like it, but without it, nothing will ever get done.
Regardless of how angry and irritated you get at your boss, they are needed.
Now, if you are the boss, imagine telling the lazy person you are to do something.
You are the one that has to get up and do things.
There’s no one there to tell you anything.
So if you don’t get up and do the work, then guess what?
No one will.
Hard Work is Necessary
Working for any job out there is easy, but all the complaining is what makes it seem hard.
The beauty of a regular old-day job is the fact that you know what to do.
You don’t have to do much thinking, and you do that same thing every single day.
Running a business is different.
You have to think about how you are going to go about doing things.
You have to think about why your business is succeeding or failing.
There’s way too much that comes into running a home-based business that most will never understand.
As a soon to be, home-based business owner, do expect some hard work ahead.
You Need Patience and Commitment
Starting a home-based business online requires a lot of patience.
Before any earning comes, you will have to do a lot of learning.
Most people will not stick around long enough to see real success, and that’s okay.
For you, you need to stick it out and never look back.
As long as you put in the work, the results will follow.
It’s not going to happen overnight, but when it does, it does.
Then you can do the things that most of the people you know will never do in their life.
Conclusion – Start a Home Based Business Today

Working from home on the internet is fantastic, and even those not doing it can vouch.
It might not be for everyone, but anyone can do it.
I don’t care how busy you are or how much time you don’t have; you need to take the time to at least get started.
The work you put in today will give you the life you want tomorrow.
Okay, maybe not tomorrow, but in the future.
As a home-based online business owner myself, I love everything about it, and I know you will too.
