If you want to make money mowing lawns, I’m more than happy to help.
I did it back when I was a teenager and made a whopping $8.35/hr.
My brother was my boss.
At the time, I didn’t know any better and pretty much got ripped off.
I can’t complain, though, as it did help with the little teenager things I wanted.
Fast forward to today, and I can only think about how much money my brother made.
He made all that money from cutting grass and the help of his little brother.
So how can I show you how to make money mowing lawns when I didn’t bring in the big bucks?
How about the fact that I was just 14?
There’s no way I could start any business at that age, and there’s no way that my brother would and should have paid me even half of what he made.
With that being said, I’m all grown up, and I do run my own businesses.
I make money with some manual labor in the real world, and I even make money blogging within the digital space.
There are a million and one ways to make money, but today I want to focus on one of the few manual labor things that I enjoy doing.
Yes, I enjoy everything that comes with doing yard work.
Maybe it’s because of the manual labor?
Maybe it’s because of the satisfaction you get when something looks beautiful and fresh?
Whatever the reason, I like everything that goes with mowing lawns and getting them to look nice and pretty.
Now what might be the coolest part about all this is the fact that there is a lot of money to be made.
Even part-time.
So if you are looking to make money mowing lawns, this post will give you some of the best tips out there.
Getting Started

I’m not going to question your intelligence, but I’m sure you know you need a lawnmower of some sort.
I hope you don’t think you’re going to make thousands of dollars with a pair of gloves and a pair of scissors because it’s not going to happen.
Now, there’s more to it than just getting a lawnmower and heading out into the world to cut some grass.
There is more that needs to be understood, or you might just find yourself quitting because you aren’t making the kind of money you imagined.
Most importantly, though, you might have the wrong impression on what the job entails.
So without trying to confuse you, let’s see what it takes to make money mowing lawns.
Every Business Starts With a Passion

I know we all have to work to make a living, but I’m sure you knew that.
When most people think of work, they think of mowing lawns, janitors, plumbers, and every other job that requires you to get down and dirty.
When they think of passion, they think of chefs, art, and all the other fancy things that the world has you thinking is a “dream job.”
Screw all that.
Doing yard work is and requires the same passion that you would have for every other job out there.
If you are simply looking to make money mowing lawns because you know you can make a couple of bucks here and there, that’s about all you’ll get.
Now, if you treat it seriously and actually enjoy it, you will make thousands of dollars more than you would if you treated it like a regular old job.
When I mow lawns, I like to sit back and admire my work.
I like to see every little detail and clean every little corner within that yard.
The person or company you are working for will see that as well, which will allow you to keep that contract as well as get some recommendations.
So if you think that you can’t be passionate about something like yard work, think again.
If you don’t have that passion, you’re better off looking into some other kind of work.
Now that we got that out of the way let’s get a little further into the business.
Picking Equipment

I believe that every business should have the best equipment, but there’s always an exception.
One exception.
The fact that you are just starting and you probably don’t have the best budget.
That’s fine, and I wouldn’t recommend buying anything expensive anyways.
At least not just yet.
However, I’m under the impression that you want to make the most money here.
And, that’s why I’m going to give you some pointers.
For now, a push mower and the essential cleaning tools is all you need, unless you can get more.
Make some money and then invest it in getting more equipment later.
At the very least, you are going to need the basics.
- Mower
- Edger
- Rake
- Some trash bags
- Leaf blower (if possible)
With that basic setup, you can start doing some yards and making some money.
Landing Clients

What good are your mentality and some awesome equipment if you aren’t going to get any customers?
For starters, your neighbors and family members will be a great target.
Look for those that are too busy to cut their own grass.
Look for those that have their grass growing past their knees.
You probably see them already, and you know they could use some help.
Get the experience and then venture out later.
You can find clients on Facebook, the classifieds section in your daily paper, or even on the bulletin boards of schools, restaurants, and coffee shops.
That alone is a great way to get some of your best clients.
Now, if you want to take things up a notch, you might want to consider some advertising.
Start by going the free route and post your services on FB groups in your area.
Once you get things flowing, you can then consider paying for ads.
However, you should be fine using the free route for now.
Analyzing Your Start

After a couple of weeks into your business, you want to sit back and see where things are headed.
Ask yourself a few questions to see what your next plan of action is going to be.
Did you like the work you were doing?
Are your clients happy with your work?
Do you see the true potential of running your very own lawn cutting service?
From there, you can then decide on what to do next.
If you didn’t enjoy it, you can quit or give it more time as the beginning is usually the hardest part when it comes to business.
What I do want you to see is how much money you made.
Look at that amount and understand that you can make ten times more than what you have.
Think about landing a contract with a business.
Think about getting ten more yards and how much you can make.
Mowing lawns and doing some yard work is one of the better businesses to run, but not many are willing to do it.
This is great for people like you and me, though, because it leaves us more space to grow.
Taking On Other Jobs

Once you have got a feel for the overall business, you need to start thinking about doing other types of services.
Heck, you were probably asked to do something extra, and you didn’t know how to go about doing it.
This can come in the form of doing some tree trimming, getting rid of some junk, or even pressure washing a driveway.
There are many other services you can provide if you allow yourself to grow.
When you make money, don’t be quick to spend, and please don’t treat this as a way to pay your bills.
Use it as a means to make more than just pocket change because there is way too much potential with something so simple.
Consider getting a pressure washer if you see the need for one.
If you have more than one customer asking you to cut down some trees, think about what you need to get that type of work done.
What started as a simple grass-cutting job that made you $100 has now turned into a full-blown project that can go well into $300 +.
Is Cutting Grass Profitable?

You got that right.
Cutting grass is one of the better ways to make money and even a living.
Everyone is too caught up with their job or business that they could use a hand with their yards.
Make this your specialty, and you will be the go-to when it comes to yard work.
Treat it like the real business it is, and you will prosper.
Treat it like a part-time job, and you will definitely find yourself scratching your head, wondering why your business isn’t growing.
Some might say you should work smarter, not harder when it comes to something like yard work, but that does not apply.
Cutting grass and landscaping is a huge business that I prefer a lot more than most.
How Much Money Can You Make Cutting Grass?
According to Indeed.com, lawn care specialists earn anywhere from $11.01/hr – $14.29/hr.
As a teen, I made a lot less than that.
And, that is why I would never recommend you make money cutting grass through a company.
Now, if you were to do these lawns yourself, that’s when you can start seeing some more significant numbers.
There is no one answer to this question, but you can expect to make anywhere from $50 – $300 for just one yard.
Of course, everything depends on the size and the type of work you will be doing.
But making anywhere from $500 – $1,000 a week is not far-fetched.
Now, when you are just starting, don’t expect too much.
Get a couple of yards here and there, and build up your portfolio, but most especially your mind.
Get the feel of running a legit business and let everything fall into place.
Do You Need a Business License?

You need a business license for every business if you are making some kind of money.
Now, if you’re doing a couple of yards here and there, you’ll be fine and can operate without one.
Once you start landing more clients and bringing in more money, that’s when you need to get licensed as well as insured.
I do hope that you’re looking into this venture with the idea that you are going to make a lot of money, though.
